Indonesia achieves self-sufficiency in eight food commodities: Gov't - ANTARA News Jawa Timur

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announced that Indonesia has achieved self-sufficiency in eight strategic food commodities due to collaboration between the government, farmers, agricultural extension workers, academics, agricultural businesses, the Indonesian military, and the police.

In a statement on Wednesday (July 22), Sulaiman outlined that the eight commodities include rice, corn, large chilies, cayenne pepper, consumer sugar, chicken, eggs, and shallots.

According to him, the achievement has enabled Indonesia to reduce its reliance on imports of these commodities, with some now being exported.

The minister informed that the current Government Rice Reserve (CBP) has exceeded 5 million tons, which he described as the highest in Indonesian history.

He also stated that the Farmer Exchange Rate (NTP) reached 127.73 in May 2026, while the agricultural sector's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 5.74 percent.

He mentioned this achievement was supported by government policies, including an increase in the government purchase price (HPP) for unhusked rice, improvements in fertilizer distribution management, and a reduction in subsidized fertilizer prices.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that the agricultural sector is the main foundation of national development. Amid global turmoil, Indonesia has achieved various strategic achievements, from self-sufficiency in eight food commodities, the highest government rice reserves in history, to the highest NTP since Indonesian independence.

The president stressed that a nation's success is ultimately measured by its ability to feed its people.

"Every country, every economy must be measured. We ask ourselves whether the nation can provide food, feed its people. That is the most fundamental thing. What's the point of our independence if we cannot provide the most basic element of civilization: food," he stated.

He noted that no civilization can endure without food security, prompting the government to prioritize agricultural development through the expansion of productive land, better water management, pro-farmer policies, and affordable fertilizer.

Prabowo also stated that various policies implemented by the Red and White Cabinet have yielded tangible results.

"I mentioned earlier that we are self-sufficient in eight food commodities. Our rice reserves are the highest in history and our Farmer's Exchange Rate is the highest in history as well," he emphasized.

Prabowo considered these achievements to be proof of Indonesia's ability to strengthen national food security amidst the global threat of a food crisis due to conflict and climate change.

"The world is at war. Many countries are worried and panicking about food problems. We have already strengthened our food security," he stated.

According to the president, a strong national economy should translate into a commitment to providing all citizens with sufficient, nutritious, and affordable food.
