RI, China reiterate partnership in energy and climate action

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and China reiterate their commitment to strengthen partnerships in energy and climate action during a meeting between Indonesia's Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat and China's Special Envoy for Climate Change Liu Zhenmin.The meeting took place here in Jakarta on Thursday (July 30) to follow up the commitments from Indonesian and Chinese leaderships to put environment and green cooperation as the main pillar of bilateral relations.

"Indonesia believes that environment protection is not a burden in development. It is a foundation of sustainable economic growth," Minister Hidayat said according to a statement from Environment Ministry received here on Friday.

Hidayat said Indonesia supports the growth through environmental protection paradigm in order to build the people's welfare and ensure green economy benefits all parts of the society.

During the meeting, Hidayat said Indonesia has enacted a new approach in its climate action by integrating mitigation, adaptation, and welfare as its main pillars.

He also expressed hope the partnership between Indonesia and China will continue to benefit each other and expand to other sectors within the scope of energy and climate action.

"We expect the cooperation to be oriented to real actions, such as innovation, green investment, transfer of technology, and capacity building, to ensure direct benefits for the people of our nations and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," Minister Hidayat remarked.

In response, Liu Zhenmin expressed his deep appreciation to Indonesia's leadership among the developing world and reiterated China's commitment to strengthen strategic cooperation.

"We are ready to deepen practical cooperation in climate change, clean energy, green technology, early warning systems, circular economy, and environmental protection. "We are also ready to cooperate with Indonesia in upholding the interest of developing countries in global climate actions," Liu said.

According to the statement, both officials agreed to focus green cooperation between Indonesia and China on investments in renewable energy, battery-based electric vehicle ecosystems, solar panel industry, and green industry supply chains.

Hidayat and Liu also agreed that Indonesia and China should strengthen partnerships in the early disaster warning system, tropical rainforest protection, waste-to-energy projects, and biodiversity protection, as well as research, exchange of experts, and human resources development for the green sector.
