Tourism Ministry accelerates recovery of disaster-hit destinations - ANTARA News Jawa Timur

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Tourism Ministry said it is accelerating the recovery of disaster-affected tourist destinations while ensuring tourist safety and the sustainability of local livelihoods.

"We must protect people first, accelerate the recovery of destinations and community livelihoods, maintain tourist trust, and rebuild in a safer and more resilient manner," Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said in a statement here on Friday.

In the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru area, for example, the Tourism Ministry coordinated with the Forestry Ministry, which manages the area, after a forest fire forced the closure of tourism activities.

The government also ensured that tourists received information about destination conditions, as well as refund and rescheduling mechanisms during the closure period.

Meanwhile, in Labuan Bajo and the Flores region, the Tourism Ministry coordinated with local governments, the Labuan Bajo Flores Tourism Authority, associations, and various industry players after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake affected the tourism sector.

Several destinations were temporarily closed, while tourist attractions, accommodations, accessibility, and tourism villages sustained damage.

The West Manggarai district government later reported that tourism activities in Labuan Bajo had resumed and that the destination could receive tourists normally. Tourist arrivals also remained relatively stable following the earthquake.

In Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, the Tourism Ministry also took response measures after a fire hit Sade Traditional Village.

According to data as of August 27, 75 homes were completely destroyed, while 20 other homes outside Sade Village were affected. Eleven meeting halls and various supporting facilities also sustained damage, with total losses estimated at Rp33.84 billion.

As part of its short-term response, the ministry ensured that basic community needs were met through food and logistical assistance, public kitchens, trauma healing, technical guidance, and the empowerment of tourism awareness groups (Pokdarwis).

For the long term, the Tourism Ministry is pushing for a Sade Traditional Village Reconstruction Master Plan to consolidate reconstruction support through a single channel and build livable homes.

"What is very important is that the reconstruction process for Sade must be carried out together with the community and stakeholders in order to maintain the character and cultural identity of the Sasak tribe," Wardhana said.
