Indonesia seeks stronger ADB support for human capital development

Jakarta (ANTARA) - National Development Planning Minister Rachmat Pambudy has called on the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to step up its support for human capital development, social infrastructure, and digital infrastructure as Indonesia transforms its economy and development model."When we talk about infrastructure, we have traditionally focused on physical assets such as roads, bridges, dams, airports, and seaports," Pambudy said during a meeting with ADB Vice President for East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific, Scott Morris.

According to an official statement issued here on Saturday, Pambudy said Indonesia needed to invest more in social infrastructure and human capital, alongside conventional infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and seaports.

"This is also the kind of support we need from the ADB," he said.

He stressed that investing in human capital was becoming increasingly important as countries grapple with climate change, geopolitical and geo-economic uncertainty, and rapid technological advances.

Indonesia and the ADB should therefore work together to develop approaches that address the challenges of the next five to 10 years while helping the country achieve its vision Golden Indonesia 2045, he noted.

"We need a new development model to respond to a constantly changing world. We can learn from other countries’ experiences, but they can also learn from Indonesia," Pambudy said.

Human capital development and social infrastructure must therefore be central to Indonesia’s future development agenda, he added.

Morris welcomed the proposal and said the ADB was ready to expand its support for human capital development, including education, healthcare, and skills training to help workers adapt to the digital transformation.

"We also recognize that the digital agenda requires more advanced skills development, including in Indonesia, and we can support the country in this area," he added.

The ADB also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Indonesia’s strategic priorities, including developing the semiconductor industry, strengthening critical minerals and energy and water security, improving project preparation, and developing the Bappenas Institute in partnership with the ADB Institute.
